Thoughts from College Football Week 1

Week 1 of the college football has come and gone, and it was a good one, with some blowouts, and with some good games. We went 20-5 with our picks here, but we know that record is misleading-many of the first week games are easy to call, as so many cupcakes are scheduled (except you UW). Thoughts on week one:

BEST ENDING (tie): Tennessee misses a OT field goal to give Slick Rick Neuheisel a win in his first game as Bruins coach; Virginia Tech learns the importance of special teams when Eastern Carolina returns a blocked punt for the go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter.

BEST BLOWOUT: Idaho lost 70-0 to Arizona and the headline on the Vandals football Web site stated "Vandals can't keep up with Arizona." Understatement?

MOST MISLEADING: The University of Oregon layed the smackethdown on the Huskies, but lead only 14-10 at halftime. For all the talk about Jake Locker improving his passing, he hit less than 50 percent of his passes (a bit misleading, since his receivers had the hands of a paraplegic). Oregon manhandled the UW offensive and defensive lines. I regret that the UW made me even watch the second half.

SURPRISING: I have to give EWU credit. Against a team with an explosive offense, the Eagles defense soared in the loss. Of the Red Raiders seven touchdowns, only one came from more than six yards out (a 26-yard touchdown pass). The other scores: runs of 2, 1, 1, 6 and a 4 and 1 yard pass. Against the best offense they'll see all year, Eastern made Texas Tech earn their points. Bodes well for Beau Baldwin's Eagles.

SWEET RUNNING GAME: Clemson gained ZERO yards rushing against Alabama. Nice job queers.

MOST BORING GAME EVER: WSU's loss to Oklahoma State. Seriously, what happened in this game? So boring that I watch the entire thing and don't remember a single detail from it.

WESTERN KENTUCKY WATCH: They lost.

Well Fishbear, college football is back and the same old BS is going on once again. Hats off to USC and UCLA for stepping up, winning and most of all, playing someone important. That is why USC is #1. Georgia, Ohio State, Arizona, Air Force and Penn State all played high school teams. God love most of the Pac-10 teams who play tough teams right from the start not to mention those Pac-10 teams who can ambush you during the year.

My head hurts for WSU and the UW. I really would like to see Ty do well at the UW but I think they are looking for the new coach as we speak. Give WSU two years and watch the hell out! New coach, playing lots of freshman and sophomores…that all adds up to bowl games in two years. Oh yeah, WSU by 13 in the Apple Cup.

Good for UCLA for winning their first game under Neweasel. Now I hope they tank every game for the rest of the year. PLEASE USC, beat them by 40 this year!

And for Fishbears adopted team…GO RED ROCKETS!!
